Collect
Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills
to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen |
Post Communion
keep us faithful to the apostles' teaching and
fellowship,
united in prayer and the breaking of bread,
and one in joy and simplicity of heart,
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen |
Dear Friends,
At Lighthouse this year the theme was ‘The Ten Commandments’
and the teaching was presented in a In Isaiah 40, we
read how those who trust in the Lord will find new strength and soar like
eagles. Now the eagle is an interesting bird, especially when the time comes
for a mother to teach her eaglets to fly. For the mother eagle allows an eaglet
in its nest to clamber onto her back and then she flies away from the nest,
high above the ground. Whilst flying, she will then suddenly tip an eaglet off
her back and at that point the eaglet will hurtle downwards flapping its wings.
If it looks like the eaglet isn’t managing the mother will swoop down and catch
the eaglet, but the process is repeated until the eaglet learns to fly!
In these early days of September, with young people
starting school or college and others returning to work after the summer, so
our Church family will be embarking on a new series of sermons and services
which will be based on John Ortberg’s book ‘If you want to walk on water,
you’ve got to get out of the boat’. So if you haven’t read this book yet, do
get hold of a copy. This series will be taking us on a journey that looks at
the whole subject of trusting in God, which is very timely as we prepare
ourselves for the refurbishment and renewal of St. Mary’s and spending most of
next year out of the Church! However, whilst making the comparison between
living the Christian life and the experience an eaglet has when its learning to
fly, yet in all things, let’s keep in mind that the mother eagle takes its
young out of the nest so that they can learn to fly, and God asks us to step
out in faith so that we too can “soar on wings like eagles”. So if we want to
soar, we will need to trust in God!
