A basic pattern for these services is as follows.
Music – Music can be played on the organ or recorded music as the congregation gathers. If recorded music is wanted please check with the minister when planning the service. Talk with the minister and organist about music being played on the organ. (Some frequently requested music and hymns are listed under the Choosing music heading.)
Hymn – Some of the most requested hymns are given below
Secular reading – Some choose to have a poem or passage read by family member or friend
Tribute – (Optional) if wanted usually done by member of the family or close friend.
Bible reading – This can be read by family member or friend. The Minister can help you choose a reading. Some frequently used passages are given later.
Hymn – May be sung at this point
Commendation – Commending the deceased to God’s care
(Committal – If the service is at a crematorium.)
Hymn – may be sung at this point
Committal – If the service is in church then those going to the burial or cremation follow the coffin to the burial ground or crematorium.
Music – may be played as the coffin leaves or people disperse.
There is considerable flexibility in the pattern to build in ways of incorporating family and friends and making the service personal.
