Floodlighting

Floodlighting St Mary’s was the vision of a previous Rector, Revd Nick Green. For many years the floodlit view of St. Mary’s Church has proved inspirational and provided a visible sign of our mission and outreach into the community. The spire can be seen from a distance when driving towards the town and the light acts as a beacon to those returning.  In these dark lockdown days, it is a beacon of hope to the local community.

Ever since the floodlighting was installed in 1994, we have operated a scheme whereby people can sponsor the floodlighting for one or more nights to mark a special event or remember a loved one.  Many of the sponsors are not church members but local people who regard St Mary’s as “their” church and wish to celebrate births, anniversaries or just simply to give thanks.

Sponsorship of the floodlighting of the church costs £5 per night. The lights are turned on from dusk to 11pm all through the year.
