As a Church we have committed ourselves to setting aside a significant sum of money every year to support the work of Christian and other charities. This year we will give 20% of our budgeted income for this purpose. Major awards (ca £4000) are made for a period of 3 years.  Minor awards (ca £2000) are for one year only.

At the meeting in  September 2011 the PCC voted to make awards to the following charities in the next financial year (2012):

New Major Award for 2012

CMS Africa

Mission partners in West Nile. Rev Allan works with local pastors and church teachers to write and distribute preaching material. Dr Anne Lacey teaches in the School of Nursing and is helping establish local health centres.

We began supporting the Laceys last year. They have visited us while on leave and have been sending updates on their work. David hopes our links will strengthen and some people may go out to visit them.

Provides family and parenting support to some of our most vulnerable local residents living at Saunderton Lodge. Employs 2 project workers providing personal visits and running groups to discuss child care and teach new skills. 39 families received support last year. Most funding comes from WDC and this is likely to be cut, making all grants vital for the work to continue.

Hamlin Fistula UK

This charity supports the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia and its outreach program. This was all begun by a dedicated missionary couple, Drs Reg and Catherine Hamlin. Now widowed and aged 87, Catherine still works at the hospital and as a fundraiser. Women travel for days to reach these hospitals which offer curative surgery for incontinence which results from obstructed labour. Without this they are lifelong outcasts from their communities. Maternity nurse training to prevent this problem is also a major part of their work.
